]An argument in favor of AI that carries some validity is that of the “you’re going to get behind if you don’t embrace it” variety. Quick counters being, “behind in what?” and “define embrace.”
In an attempt to steel man, “getting behind,” relates to the need that a better future is needed and AI is an available tool that helps create that better future; and to embrace does not have to entail selling one’s soul to a machine, but instead is the intentional usage of said tool for good as a way to cancel out its usage for bad.
As someone who leans more towards AI-skepticism, I can acknowledge these arguments, even embrace them situationally. But there is something to be said about your default AI switch being set to “off” rather than “on,” as the masses do the opposite.
To create the future, having a superpower is more important than having effective tools at your disposal. Soon, the ability to engage in long-form focus, a muscle developed and strengthened by whole books and human writing, will be rare. Such scarcity breeds true innovation.
(Somewhat ironically, I did use the AI image generator for the cover photo.)

Emerging Narratives isn’t going away, but I am starting a new Substack. Much of what I write here answers the question, “What do I want to write about?” Which has resulted in quite a broad and diverse (in the best sense of that word) catalog of writing. Attempting to narrow my focus when it’s needed, this new Substack will answer, “Who do I want to write about?”—narrowed down even further to just American subjects. Check it out below, and subscribe if interested!
