It’s become cliche, when expressing gratitude, to say something like, “well actually, it’s also good to be thankful for bad things too.” And while that’s a true statement, it’s one that’s rarely ever lived out. Saying that you’re thankful for something bad is one thing. Actually being thankful for it is something else entirely, understandably so.
There’s so much about the last 20 months I hate, of which has been covered in this newsletter. It wasn’t until recently, however, that I started to sense some actual gratitude within me for the difficulties.
To put it simply, I went backwards and then forwards. First, I went into a shell of self-defense and world-loathing. I wanted everything to go back to the way it was pre-March 2020. But that’s not happening. Once that acceptance occurred, I began to realize the opportunity that lay ahead.
The opportunity ahead provides us a blank slate in which to build, as the malaise of a more comfortable world has been shattered. Our shell needs to be shed and the work must commence. What’s taken place has provided more clarity than I would have ever received in the old world. So for that, I am thankful.
Tomorrow at 8:30am EST I will be a part of the pilot episode for the new YouTube livestream morning show The Morning After. The plan for the show is for it to run M/W/F, and I’ll be a regular contributor. You can catch it live or watch it after the fact by following the link below (press “subscribe” and you’ll be notified every time we go live).

I’m thankful for all of you. Happy Thanksgiving!
